Optical modeling and measurements of a coccolithophore bloom.

چکیده
Blooms of the phytoplankton coccolithophorid Emiliania huxleyi can cause significant changes to both the inherent and the apparent optical properties within an oceanic column. Measurements made within such a bloom off the southwestern coast of England during July 1999 are reported. The multiple scattering properties of the bloom prevented accurate retrieval of absorption (a) and attenuation (c) coefficients with a WETLabs ac-9. Upwelling radiance measurements were similarly affected by the bloom, which caused the sensors to saturate. An optical model has been developed that gives close agreement with the in situ optics when it is used as input to the Hydrolight radiative-transfer model.

Semi-empirical correction algorithm for AC-9 measurements in a coccolithophore bloom.
Values for the coefficients of absorption (a) and attenuation (c) obtained from AC-9 measurements in coccolithophore blooms do not provide satisfactory inputs for radiance transfer models. We have therefore modified the standard AC-9 scattering correction algorithm by including an extra term, F(lambda, lambda(r)), which allows for possible wavelength dependence in the scattering phase function....
متن کاملCoccolithophores on the north-west European shelf: calcification rates and environmental controls
Coccolithophores are a key functional group in terms of the pelagic production of calcium carbonate (calcite), although their contribution to shelf sea biogeochemistry, and how this relates to environmental conditions, is poorly constrained. Measurements of calcite production (CP) and coccolithophore abundance were made on the northwest European shelf to examine trends in coccolithophore calcif...
متن کاملCoccolith chemistry reveals secular variations in the global ocean carbon cycle?
The mismatch between the 100 and 400 k.y. components of Pleistocene climate and the relative power of those terms from the eccentricity of the Earth's orbit remains a challenge to the Milankovitch hypothesis. Coccolithophores have the potential to respond to parameters of orbital forcing other than insolation, and, as a critical component of the ocean carbon cycle, can act to modify the climate...

1) It is now accepted that water-leaving radiance is proportional to the seawater concentration of suspended calcite and more precisely to surface densities of detached coccoliths and not only coccolithophore cells (Balch et al.2005). The coccolith-tococcolithophore ratio is highly variable and increases towards the end of the bloom (Holligan et al. 1993). Reducing the estimate of CaCO3 standin...
متن کاملModeling Underwater Visual and Filter Feeding by Planktivorous Shearwaters in Unusual Sea Conditions
Short-tailed Shearwaters (Puffinus tenuirostris) migrate between breeding areas in Australia and wintering areas in the Bering Sea. These extreme movements allow them to feed on swarms of euphausiids (krill) that occur seasonally in different regions, but they occasionally experience die-offs when availability of euphausiids or other prey is inadequate. During a coccolithophore bloom in the Ber...
